Textual Analysis of Filmstar Front Cover

The second film magazine front cover I will analyse is Filmstar. I have chosen this magazine because it only started in May this year therefore it should have a modern feel to it that will appeal to the target audience of our film.
The median of this product is print in the form of a magazine front cover. The ideology of this front cover is not as professional as Total Film but this could be because of the featured film on the front. As New Moon was on the front of Total Film it had to have a spooky erie feel whereas there is a romantic comedy film featured on the cover of Filmstar. The genre of the magazine is films and in this particular issue, romantic comedy. The representation of this front cover is fun and friendly, this is o match the representation of the featured film. The audience that this magazine is aimed at is 25+ so it just misses our target audience for our film. This could mean that we could use some codes and conventions found in this magazine but alter them to suit our target audience. The institution of this magazine is Blackfish Publishing. The narrative of the front cover is quite simple and limited and brief sentences are included in various fonts and colours in order to look more interesting.

The only image on the front cover is the main image of the actress Zooey Deschanel who stars in the magazines feature film 500 Days of Summer. The photo is a medium close up of her face and the camera is at eye level, this lets the viewer connect to the actress on the front.
The magazines masthead is situated at the top of the page, in a bold, noticeable font. Directly underneath the masthead there is the tagline, 'Where the film is the star.' At the very top of the page in the centre there is a yellow box and inside there is New! in a black font. This has been put on the front of the magazine to grab consumer attention and make them aware that it is on the shelves. This is also on every other issue of Filmstar magazine I have looked at.
The main cover story is in text more noticeable than the masthead which you do not normally find in magazine. The actresses on the front name is shown spread across the page. More information about her upcoming film is underneath in a smaller font. The barcode is on the left hand side of the page and it is in the same place on every copy of the magazine.

There is colour scheme on this front cover which is yellow, black and bluey tones. They have used this because the actresses eye are blue so the background colour is blue to make her eyes stand out more. Other covers stories are placed around the main image but overall the front cover is quite simple and plain as there are no other images on the cover.

By looking at this front cover I do not think it is obvious what film is being featured in the magazine because the main image does not relate to the film really. The issue is more focused on the actress than the film. I do not think I will use this technique in my magazine because our aim is to portray the film more than the actors.
