Researching Institutions

When creating our trailer we will need to choose which film institution would be best suited to represent our film so we can advertise their institution logo at the beginning of our trailer to make it look more professional. I will look at institutions from the 'Big Six' which consists of 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros, Paramount, Columbia, Universal and Walt Disney. I will also research some of the smaller institutions along with some film institutions that are relatively modern to compare the differences between them.

This is the animation for the Twisted Pictures film institution. It is quite a recent company as it was founded in 2002 in Los Angeles California. Twisted Pictures is most famous for creating films from the horror genre especially the Saw series. Twisted Pictures could be a good institution to represent our own film because it is famous and has a good reputation for creating horror films which could help us when marketing our film because we would have a recognised institution. Also because it is a new company it could give our film a modern image. Although it is an American company so it may not match the image we are trying to create. Also, as it is a new company it is not very established so this may be a disadvantage to us.

I have chosen to look at Dimension Films because a lot of the trailers that I analysed were created by Dimension Films. It is a well recognised film institution as it has been around for quite a long time. It was founded November 25, 1992 and its headquarters are in New York.
It has been owned by huge companies such as the Walt Disney Company in 1994-2005 which means it will have a lot of experience within the film industry and a lot of connections. Dimension Films also have a lot of experience within the horror film industry as they created the later Halloween films, Scream, The Children of the Corn series and the Hellraiser series. Dimension Films would be a good institution to use to represent our film because it is a long running, successful company.

Paramount pictures is the world's oldest existing American film company as it was founded in 1912. Paramount is consistently ranked as one of the top grossing film studios. It is headquartered in Hollywood, Los Angeles. Paramount is possibly the most famous and successful film company of our time which would tempt us to use Paramount as our distributing label and institution. They have made hundred of films over the years and most are very popular. Paramount created the infamous horror film Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde and they have lots more experience in creating horror films. Although Paramount are more mainstream and they do not specialise in the making of horror films so this may persuade us not to use them as our institution.

Universal is also a huge film company and was also founded in 1912 but a month after Paramount Pictures which makes it the second longest running film company in the world. Universal has been very successful and has loads of experience in the film industry. We would be tempted to use them as our institution because they are such a well known company which would give our film a good image although we are not sure whether the image of our film goes with the image of Universal because they have not created many horror films and they create a lot of children's films.

I thought that I would research into New Line Cinema because they are a long running film industry as they have been established since 1967. They are also a part of Warner Brothers which is a huge film industry which would mean that they would have a lot of experience distributing films. They have distributed some very famous horror films over the years such as Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday 13th and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This would give our film a good image if we were to choose them to distribute our film.

Now that I have researched into different film institutions, I have learnt a lot about how film institutions are conducted and how they important they are to the making of the film. I do not think that one of these institutions is perfectly suited to distribute our film so I will probabaly create my own film institution so that I can manufacture it to create the exact image that I would like to create for my film.

Although, if I create a completely new film institution, I will not have the benefit of having a well known, successful film company advertised in my trailer. By having a big instituion it might attract viewers to watch the film. By researching trailers I realised that some films have more than one institution. I may use this techinque within my film because then I can include a big name in my trailer but also have an instituion that is perfect for my film. I will continue to look at more trailers and film companies until I can be sure that I have chosen the right existing institution to be used in association with the institution that I will create.
