1. What is your favourite horror film?
For this question the most popular answer was ‘The Ring’. This could suggest that out target audience might like psychological horrors. We shall now look at The Ring and its trailer to discover what it might be that our target audience like.
2. What type of horror movies do you like?
The most popular answer for this was psychological horror. This was the main reason why we chose to make a teaser trailer for a psychological thriller film because it is the most popular within our target market.
3. What attracts you to horror films?
When asked this question the majority of our target audience answered trailer. This means that we must make our trailer very appealing to our target audience so that they would be interested in the film. It also shows us that we must devote most of our time to creating the trailer because the film poster is not as important to our audience.
4. What grabs your attention when watching a trailer?
Suspense and Camera work were the most popular answers within our target audience. This shows us what the most important aspects are when creating our trailer are and what we must focus on.
5. What do you think is the most important aspect of a film?
Set/location and plot were considered as the most important by our target audience. This means we need to find a good location to film that portrays the right representation of our film. We also need to think of a good plot to base our trailer around but as it is a teaser trailer the plot won’t be as important.
6. Have you ever been influenced to watch a film after seeing its poster?
The majority answered yes to this question. This means that we need to make the poster show the genre and representation of the film so they are tempted to watch it.
7. Do you read film magazines?
Most of our target audience do not read film magazines although we still need to create a good front cover for a film magazine because the front cover may catch someone’s eye when they could be purchasing another magazine.
8. Do you watch films after seeing their advertisement in the magazine?
Most answered no because they did not read film magazines. This suggests to us that the film poster would be more important to our audience than the film magazine.
9. What is the best way to create suspense in a trailer?
Almost everyone in our target audience answered music. This tells us that we must create a good piece of music to go with our film that relates to what is going on in the scene.
10. Do you know the difference between teaser trailers and theatrical trailers?
50% of our audience knew the difference between the two types of trailers. Majority knew that teaser trailers were shorter but didn’t know the other aspects that teaser trailers involved. This means that we should follow the codes and conventions of teaser trailers.
11. What image would you most like to see on a film poster?
Our target audience would prefer to see images of characters and locations. This shows us what we should include on our film poster. We can also see that our audience are more influenced by images rather than text.
By completing the analysis of this questionnaire we have decided that we will create a psychological thriller aimed at 16-25 year olds. This is because we have found that they like films with a bit of a twist and they think that shocks and surprises are what makes a film and its trailer exciting.
This research raises interesting issues, not least it encourages us to focus in on what the actual ingredients are that make us feel 'the fear.'
