Horror films are movies that strive to extract the emotions of fear, horror and terror from viewers. Their plots frequently involve themes of death, the supernatural or mental illness. Many horror movies also include a central villain. Early horror movies are largely based on classic literature, and they really came about in the 1890s, beggining as short silent movies. They became part of popular culture in 1930s. With advances in technology that occurred in the 1950s, the tone of horror films shifted from the gothic toward concerns that some saw as being more relevant to the late-Century audience. The horror film was seen to fall into three sub-genres: the horror-of-personality film, the horror-of-Armageddon film and the horror-of-the-demonic film .In the 1960s Alfred Hitchcock came about, with Psycho being one of famous movies o all time. The critical and popular success of Rosemary's Baby (1968), directed by Roman Polanski and starring Mia Farrow , led to the release of more films with religious themes in the 1970s, such as The Exorcist. In the present day technology has improved and the horror movie industry has advanced, and the use of CGI has come around. There has also been the introduction of mockumentrys which poke fun at the horror genre. However horror is still an extremely popular genre, within the teenage and young adult community. Recent horror movies are a lot darker and are thriller and psychological thriller based.
