Textual Analysis of Total Film Front Cover

As we want to create a film magazine front cover I thought that I would look at different magazines to recognise the layout of front covers and the codes and conventions that are shown in all magazines and also how they differ depending on what magazine you are looking at.

I will first look at Total Film to recognise what could be included in film magazine front cover. Total Film is the UK's second best selling film magazine It offers film and DVD news, reviews, and features. The magazine was launched in 1997 and is published every four weeks (13 times a year). I will first use the migrain model to help me recognise some key features of the front cover. The median of this product is print in the form of a magazine front cover. The ideology of this particular front cover that features the new Twilight film, New Moon is spooky and mysterious because they are trying to portray the ideology of the film in the magazine. The genre of the magazine is films and the particular genre (horror/comedy/romance) depends on what type of film their main review is on. The representation if the front cover is quite professional and looks informative.

The target audience for Total Film would differ depending on what film is featured is on the front. For this issue that I am analysing featuring Twilight, the audience they will attract will most likely be teenage girls probably just because its got a photo of the goorrrgeous Taylor Lautner on the front! Although I would say that the general target audience for Total Film, and who it is mainly aimed at is 25+ year olds because the topics are not as interesting for a younger generation and they may only buy the magazine if they like the film featured on the front, but they will not be attracted to the other stories in the magazine. The institution of Total Film magazine is Future Publishing. The narrative of Total Film front cover is quite simple and clear, it does not have to be too detailed or complex because it is only a front cover.

There is a main image on the front cover of Total Film which takes up the majority of the page. It consists of three characters from the film Twilight New Moon. The ideology of the film has been portrayed through the image as they all look quite mysterious looking characters, this is also shown through the dark background of a forest at night with the moonlight shining through the trees. The masthead is shown in the centre at the top of the page where a masthead is usually found. It stands out from the rest of the page because it is in a big bold font, spread across the page and is in capital letters. Sometimes the colour of the masthead is slightly altered to match the representation of the featured film. In this issue the masthead has been made to look like it is glowing slightly like the moon, obviously because the featured film is called New Moon. The issue number, price, date and magazine website are found underneath the masthead where they are normally found on other issues of the magazine. The actors heads overlap on top of the masthead slightly but the title can still be clearly recognised.

The barcode is shown towards the bottom of the page and on the far right. The institution logo, Future Publishing is advertised on top of the barcode. I have looked at other issues of Total Film and the bar code is in the same place on every issue.

Overlapping the main image there is text. The main text on the page is situated in the middle and is about the featured film. It says, No one is safe... New Moon, How the Twilight saga took over Hollywood. The title of the film New Moon is in the biggest font and is in the middle of the two other lines to make it look more important. No one is safe... is used as an introduction to the title of the film. How the Twilight saga took over Hollywood is a very brief explanation of what will be included in the New Moon article. All this text is in white and slightly glowing like the masthead was to represent the moonlight.

At the very top of the page in block capitals there is 'Free giant film posters'. This is an offer to attract the consumer to buy the magazine. This text is in a light creamy yellow colour. This is because it is not related to the featured film so the text has been put in a different colour so that the viewer can differentiate between the topics. There are two small images of two film posters which are the new Alice in Wonderland poster and A Christmas Carol poster. These images show what posters the consumer will get which may influence the consumers decision whether or not to buy the magazine.

Just under the masthead on the left there is a blue circle and inside there is a small image of Spiderman and text talking about new films that are coming out and one included is Spiderman 4. This is the last of the images that are included on the front cover. Only two other small images have been put on the front cover this is so that the viewer does not get distracted from the main images and this is the main focal point of the cover.

There is more text on the front cover around the side of the page so it does not cover the main image too much. It is in the same creamy yellow font colour as used before. The cover stories are used to entice the viewer to read the magazine, there are famous actors names shown and new films that are coming out to interest the reader.

I think that Total Film represent its feature film very well but I do not think that it is aimed at the same target market as the film. Maybe this is to attract a new market, but I want our film magazine to attract our target audience to our film. I will take inspiration from some of the codes and conventions used in Total Film but I will alter some of them because I think that is it aimed at a older age group than our film.
