Textual Analysis of Jeepers Creepers Film Poster

This is the poster that accompanies the 2001 horror film Jeepers Creepers. The median of this product is print in the form of a poster. The first thing that the viewer notices when looking at the poster is the main image of the scary, evil eye looking through the fabric. This is the first thing they will notice because it seems to follow you and because it is looking directly at the viewer it catches their attention. The eye and skin around the eye does not look like it belongs to a human so this gives the viewer an idea that the film may be about a monster.

The colour palette of the poster is quite dull so you can tell that the audience it is trying to attract is an older one. It looks like the eye is looking through leather that is being held together by bits of old, thin rope. Leather could have been used because it is like skin, to relate with the film. The stitching could represent the ‘human tapestry’ that ‘The Creeper’ has in his underground lair and how they are attached by stitching. At the top of the page in smaller white text there is some narrative saying ‘What’s eating you?’ This is very significant because it is a direct question to the viewer so it grabs their attention and interests them in the poster. It shows the film is American because it is a phrase used in America and means ‘What’s wrong with you?’ It also suggests ideas to the viewer about what the film is about. It relates to the film because ‘The Creeper’ eats parts of his victims.

The title of the film ‘Jeepers Creepers’ is written at the bottom of the page in a big bold, white font. Some of the text is broken this could also be a representation of the stitching. The title could have been placed at the bottom of the page so that it is the last thing that the viewer sees so it sticks in their memory. The lighting in the poster is dark around the edges and the light is focussed on the centre of the poster where the eye is. This is to draw the viewer’s eye to the main image first.
What is strange with this poster is that there are none of the actors or actresses names that star in the film advertised, this could be because the main actors are young so they would not be well known at that time. The main character is played by Justin Long who is know a quite well known actor now but in 2001, not many people would have heard of him. Advertising the actors and actresses names on the posters is supposed to attract the audience but there isn't any point of including actors names that no one has ever heard of because it wouldn't attract many viewers.

I think that the poster for Jeepers Creepers, although simple, mirrors the representation of the film successfully because it grabs the viewer’s attention with clever images like the eye and because there isn’t a lot going on there isn’t a lot for the viewer to focus on so it will stick in their memory easier.
